There is a framed Podolski number-ten shirt on the wall. We are sitting in a döner shop in Düsseldorf, and the football name is right there above the food.
But the question I raise in the video goes beyond lunch: what could our footballers and other athletes build with the capital and recognition they have? A place people use. A product they buy again. Something that works outside the stadium.
This stop follows the journey from Hamburg toward Düsseldorf. The interesting part is how quickly an ordinary meal can turn into a conversation about building a business.
What Mangal’s own information establishes
Mangal’s website identifies Lukas Podolski as a founder and advertises 34+ branches in 20+ cities. These are the company’s published figures, not an independently audited count. Its franchise page dates his involvement to 2018 and the opening of its franchise system to 2022. The story therefore has a longer business timeline than a simple “finished football, opened a shop” description. ¹
The same franchise page describes support with purchasing, marketing and staff training. That is the part I want to look at: what sits behind a recognisable face when the doors open every morning?
A famous name can get my attention. It cannot prepare every order, train every employee or answer every disappointed customer. My question for our athletes is about taking that first advantage and building something useful around it.
It does not have to be a döner shop. Copying the category is less interesting than understanding the work.
Mangal Döner Düsseldorf: a dated price snapshot
For something concrete, I checked the Nordstraße 94 online ordering menu, operated through Lieferando. That provides a reproducible comparison; it does not establish which branch appears in the video or what we paid at the counter. ²
| Item | Listed price |
|---|---|
| Poldi’s Sandwich | €10.49 |
| Poldi’s Dürüm | €11.49 |
| Poldi’s Weltmeisterteller | €16.99 |
The Dürüm is €1.00, or 9.5%, above the sandwich. The plate is €6.50, or 62.0%, above it. These compare the listed prices of different products, not equal portions or nutritional value. They exclude extras and delivery or service fees.
Just as in my Kosovo–Germany grocery comparison, the number becomes useful only when you say exactly what is being compared. An online menu is evidence of an advertised price on that date. It is not my receipt.
Sales are the beginning of the calculation
Take the sandwich price as an illustration. 100 sandwiches × €10.49 = €1,049 in gross item sales. At the same price, 200 would give €2,098. The quantities are hypothetical; neither figure is a report of this restaurant’s daily sales.
Nor is either figure profit. Ingredients, wages, rent, energy, taxes and any applicable platform or franchise charges still matter. I do not have those accounts, so there is no honest profit margin to put beside the photograph.
This is where the question becomes more demanding. Can the business serve customers well and cover what it costs to do so? Can the people running it repeat that tomorrow?
The shirt on the wall tells you why you recognise the name. The work behind the counter determines what happens after that recognition.
That is what I want the conversation to be about when we talk about our athletes and their money.
What are we building with it?

Calculations: (11.49 − 10.49) ÷ 10.49 × 100 = 9.53%; (16.99 − 10.49) ÷ 10.49 × 100 = 61.96%, rounded to one decimal. Illustrative gross sales: 100 × 10.49 = 1,049; 200 × 10.49 = 2,098 euros. Inputs and formulas.
